Ghana FA Cup champions Asante Kotoko have officially released eight players following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, signaling the start of a major squad revamp as the club prepares for the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup.
Leading the list of high-profile departures is club captain Justice Blay, whose contract expired at the end of the campaign. Once a key figure and fan favorite in midfield, Blay’s exit comes amid reports of disciplinary issues, which influenced the decision not to extend his stay. Despite his leadership on the pitch, the club has opted for a new direction.
Also departing is Michael Kyei Dwamena, a former WAFA midfielder who has completed his three-year stint with the Kumasi-based side. Renowned for his work ethic and consistency, Dwamena now becomes a free agent and is attracting interest from several Ghana Premier League clubs.
Fernando Wisdom Bassey, the Nigerian striker signed from Sporting Lagos in August 2024, has also been released after a disappointing season. Bassey managed just one goal in 16 league appearances, falling short of expectations despite completing pre-season with the team.
Additionally, Daniel Adrian Adjetey, Kwasi Asante, Samuel Tenadu, and Sampson Eduku—all mid-season signings—have been shown the exit door. The quartet struggled to make a notable impact, and the technical team has deemed them surplus to requirements.
These exits form part of a broader restructuring project spearheaded by the club’s management and technical team, aimed at assembling a stronger, more competitive squad capable of making a mark in continental football.
Meanwhile, Kotoko are currently in contract renewal talks with key first-team players Frederick Asare, Andrews Ntim Manu, and Baba Yahaya, with negotiations expected to be finalized before the team resumes pre-season training.
On the recruitment front, the Porcupine Warriors are in advanced discussions to sign Hubert Gyau, Zakaria Fuseini, Francis Acquah, and other potential additions as they look to reinforce key positions on the field.
Kotoko secured their 11th FA Cup title with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Golden Kick SC, earning the right to represent Ghana in the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup.
