James Kwasi Appiah, the former Black Stars coach recently appointed as the head coach of the Sudanese national football team, has been entrusted with a crucial assignment: persuading expatriate players to represent Sudan.
As he officially takes up his role on Sunday, October 8, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he is set to sign a three-year contract, the Sudanese Football Association has high expectations for Appiah. Among his primary responsibilities is leveraging his extensive network and relationships within the footballing world, especially in Africa, to entice talented expatriate players to join the Sudanese national team.
Sudan aims to strengthen its national squad by recruiting players of Sudanese descent who have made their mark in foreign leagues. These players often consider representing their ancestral homeland, provided they receive appropriate incentives and assurances regarding the recognition of their talent and dedication.
Appiah’s previous role as head coach of Al Khartoum in Sudan in December 2014 provides him with valuable insights into Sudanese football and its potential. During his earlier tenure, he achieved notable successes, guiding his team to a fourth-place finish in the league and securing qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.
Appiah’s credibility and reputation as a coach and football ambassador position him as an influential figure to lead this mission. He believes that his passion for the game, coupled with his connections and expertise, will enable him to attract top talent to strengthen Sudan’s national team.
