The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Chairman, Kudjoe Fianoo, has made an astonishing revelation on why the Ghana Premier League is still dependent on the Ghana Football Association.
The Ghana Football Association, recently announced its plans to make the Premier League autonomous.
A five-member committee, which will include three members from the Premier League clubs and two from the FA, will soon be unveiled to champions the new course.
According to the former Ashantigold CEO, a proposal to make the premier league autonomous, was drafted even before current Ghana FA boss Kurt Okraku assumed office, adding that the Nyantakyi led administration caused its delay.
He adds, that, the erstwhile Kwesi Nyantakyi’s administration, feared the autonomous league would appear more powerful and attractive than the country’s football governing body.
”The idea of the Ghana Premier League to be autonomous started some years ago but has been fruitless. The autonomous issue has been there for a while now.
“The delay of the league going autonomous is because the previous administration feared the body to manage it will be more powerful than the GFA.
“The league may be more attractive than matches of the National Teams which they do not want it that way. How many local players are in the Black Stars?” Fianoo told Kumasi-based Fox Sports.
He further mentioned that the consistent absent and dominance of local-based players in the national teams is because the league itself is not attractive.
He, however, urged the current administration to ensure their dream of making the league autonomous finally comes to reality.
”We need to take a look at our circumstances first. We should not say some countries like the United Kingdom are practising it so we are also to do so. We should think of our circumstances for example, finances.
“If full autonomous is good for us, why not? But if we can also start it gradually that will be okay. What I am hoping is that the current FA will not turn around to kill the dream that has been harboured some years ago.” He added.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the League Management Company responsible for the Nigerian Professional Football League, Shehu Dikko, has thrown his weight behind the FA’s decision to finally make the Ghana Premier League autonomous.
He described Ghana as ”pacesetters” in football in Africa so it is time for the nation’s elite division to go autonomous.
