Former Ghana international Charles Taylor has sparked a discussion by asserting that Laryea Kingston, the former Black Starlets coach, is superior to the current Black Stars coach, Otto Addo.
Kingston recently stepped down following the Black Starlets’ 2-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the WAFU B U-17 tournament. Taylor expressed disappointment over Kingston’s resignation, viewing it as a setback for Ghanaian coaches.
“Yes, Ghana, when you say the truth you become bad in the eyes of many, but me, I will say it. To lie and get something, I will speak the truth and get nothing. If you look at the type of coach and the way Laryea goes about his work, he is better than Otto Addo,” Taylor told Peace FM.
“Laryea, I have said it, if he doesn’t bring a good reason, he has disappointed me. He has also disappointed Ghanaian coaches because we have some coaches in Ghana, if we look after them well, they will make Ghana soccer rise up again. Maxwell Konadu, Zito, Yaw Preko, and Laryea—these four people, if they are coaching, you see that they have the knowledge to coach.”
“For me, Laryea resigning, his pedigree was going to Black Stars, and he resigned. I don’t know the reason why he resigned, so I want to hear from him because in Ghana anything can happen.”
“Maybe he wasn’t paid. Someone like that, if he goes through this, we have some coaches in Ghana, they are not paid, but they are happy in their jobs. Maybe he is not happy; that is why I am saying he is a good coach. If he brings the reason, but resigning from the under-17, he didn’t try because the faith some of us and Ghanaians put into him, it is not a good idea,” Taylor concluded.
