Asante Kotoko kept their hopes of a top-three finish alive with a thrilling 3-2 home win over Medeama SC in a Ghana Premier League Matchday 33 clash on Sunday, thanks to a stunning hat-trick from Albert Amoah at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
Amoah, who was drafted in to lead the line in the absence of star forward Kwame Opoku, rose to the occasion with a clinical performance that saw him net in the 20th, 35th, and 79th minutes to seal all three points for the Porcupine Warriors.
The match began at a high tempo, with Kotoko seizing early control of possession. Their pressure paid off in the 20th minute when Albert Amoah calmly converted from the penalty spot to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Fifteen minutes later, the in-form striker doubled Kotoko’s advantage, finishing off a swift attacking move with a powerful strike that left the Medeama goalkeeper with no chance.
However, Medeama—known for their attacking prowess—fought back strongly. They pulled a goal back before the break and continued to press for an equalizer in the second half. Their efforts were rewarded, and they made it 2-2 midway through the second half, capitalizing on a momentary lapse in Kotoko’s defence.
But Albert Amoah had the final say. In the 79th minute, he completed his hat-trick with a composed finish that sent the home fans into raptures and secured a vital win for Kotoko.
With this result, Kotoko move to 58 points, remaining within touching distance of a top-three finish with just one game left in the season. Medeama, who have struggled with poor away form—now losing nine straight on the road—stay on 50 points and are out of the running for a top-four spot.
The victory is a significant boost for head coach Abdul Karim Zito, who will be pleased with the resilience and attacking sharpness displayed by his side, particularly by match-winner Albert Amoah.
Kotoko will now look ahead to their final fixture of the season with confidence as they aim to end the campaign on a high.
