Former Ghana international Michael Essien has extended his stay with Danish club FC Nordsjælland after signing a new two-year contract to continue as assistant coach.
Essien’s previous deal was set to expire in a few days, but the club has moved quickly to secure his services ahead of the new season. The 42-year-old, who first joined the club as a player-coach, has now become a key part of the coaching staff.
FC Nordsjælland officially announced their affiliation with Essien as a coach on September 9, 2020. Since then, he has steadily grown into his role and has earned the respect of players and colleagues alike.
Now holding a UEFA A-license, Essien has also completed additional training focused on football management and organisation through UEFA courses.
As a player, Michael Essien enjoyed a successful career with top European clubs including Chelsea, Real Madrid, Lyon, AC Milan, and Bastia. He later played for Panathinaikos, Persib Bandung in Indonesia, and Sabail in Azerbaijan.
He made 59 appearances for the Ghana national team, featuring in the 2006 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
Earlier in 2024, Essien reportedly turned down an offer to join Ghana’s national team coaching setup as assistant to head coach Otto Addo, choosing instead to continue his development in club football.
