Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong expressed his excitement upon arriving in Ghana for the first time on Sunday night, marking the start of a one-week holiday.
The 23-year-old Netherlands international was warmly welcomed at Kotoka International Airport as he began his much-anticipated visit. Frimpong, whose parents are Ghanaian, had previously shared his intention to visit the country following Bayer Leverkusen’s Champions League victory over Inter Milan in early December. He kept his promise and made the journey to reconnect with his heritage.
Speaking to reporters upon his arrival, Frimpong couldn’t hide his joy:
“Amazing. To come to this welcoming atmosphere for the first time, amazing. This is my people. I’m so happy to see everybody; I’m so happy to be in Ghana.”
Reflecting on his deep connection to Ghana, he said:
“I’ve always been connected to my Ghanaian roots. Both my parents are Ghanaian, I eat Ghanaian food, I speak the language, so I feel like I’ve always been connected, but obviously being here makes it extra special.”
He also explained why this trip was particularly meaningful:
“I have to come to Ghana; this is where I am from. My blood is Ghanaian blood, so for sure I had to come here one day, and this is the right time to come.”
Frimpong has been an essential player for Bayer Leverkusen, contributing 16 goals last season as they made an undefeated run to secure their first Bundesliga title. His visit to Ghana marks a special moment in his journey, where he continues to embrace his Ghanaian roots while excelling on the international stage.
