Former Black Stars management Committee Chairman Wilfred Kwaku Osei Palmer says the erstwhile Ghana Football Association(GFA) administration never had an influence on any national team selection.
The Tema Youth SC owner’s comment comes after CK Akonnor’s last call-up sparked a lot of criticisms due to some names that appeared in his final 29-man squad for the Afcon qualifiers against South Africa and Sao Tome.
Many, however, have since accused the FA of influencing Akonnor’s job.
The ace football administrator says people in authority allowed technical teams to work without suppressing their powers.
Speaking to Nhyira FM, the club President for Tema Youth says there can be calls for justification but no imposition was done.
“Selection in any sense is discriminatory. When one player is selected, another will not be selected,” Palmer, a former Ghana FA Executive Committee member said.
“Coaches are only called to rationalize decisions made so if it is deemed that player A must play ahead of player B, and there are issues, I can tell you we take the national interest first.
“It never happened during my time so I have to respect my other colleagues who are currently in leadership that they have no hand in the selection process.
“Every player who is playing at any level with quality must be captured,” Palmer, who also served as Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, said.
Ghana completed their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualification in fine style with a 3-1 home triumph over Sao Tome and Principe in their last game on Sunday.
The Black Stars will be in Cameroon next year for the challenge to be the best in Africa gaining 13 points in Group C, one better than second-placed Sudan.
Ghana will be seeking a fifth Africa Cup of Nations trophy in Cameroon next year.
