Head coach of the Black Queens, Kim Lars Björkegren, has declared that his top priority is to guide Ghana to the furthest possible stage at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The tournament marks Ghana’s return to the continental stage for the first time since 2018. The Black Queens have been drawn into a challenging Group C, alongside reigning champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.
Ghana will begin their WAFCON journey with a high-profile opener against South Africa on July 7 at the Honneur Stadium in Oudja.
“Our goal is to go as far as possible in WAFCON. This is a step for us,” Björkegren told the Ghana FA website.
“Sometimes the step goes in the right direction, and sometimes it doesn’t. But we need to keep moving and getting better every single day. That’s more important than the results today.”
The Black Queens will continue their group campaign against Mali on July 12, followed by their final group match against Tanzania on July 17. Both matches are scheduled for the Berkane Stadium.
As part of their preparations for the tournament, the Black Queens played out an entertaining 3-3 draw with Ivory Coaston Friday night. They are set to face the Ivorians once again in a second friendly fixture on Tuesday, June 3, at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan.
The 2025 WAFCON presents a major opportunity for Ghana to reclaim their place among the continent’s elite, and Coach Björkegren remains focused on steady progress and consistent improvement as the team gears up for the tournament.
