Former Ghana international Sammy Kuffour has voiced his concerns over the handling of the Black Stars’ captaincy, emphasizing the need for stability in leadership decisions.
The national team’s captaincy has been a subject of debate for years, with the most recent development seeing Jordan Ayew appointed despite Thomas Partey initially being named.
This follows previous discussions linking Mohammed Kudus and Alexander Djiku to the role, while Andre Ayew remains an active player without officially stepping down as captain.
Reflecting on past controversies, Kuffour pointed to the 2019 decision to strip Asamoah Gyan of the armband ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, a move that saw Andre Ayew take over. He believes such choices create unnecessary friction within the squad.
“We make [Black Stars captaincy] too complicated. It wasn’t the right decision to take the armband from Asamoah Gyan. As part of the NC committee, I said, ‘Let Gyan remain captain since he had only a few months left.’ We didn’t need to create tension for Dede or make Gyan feel isolated. A coach has to choose the [Black Stars] captain, and not the FA,” Kuffour told Sporty FM.
Despite the ongoing debate, Jordan Ayew has made a strong impression in his new role, leading Ghana to two commanding victories against Chad and Madagascar. His performances have been instrumental, contributing one goal and four assists.
