Former Bayern Munich and Ghanaian football legend Sammy Kuffour has strongly criticized Jamie Carragher for his comments downplaying the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Kuffour insists the former Liverpool defender must apologize to Africans for his remarks.
Carragher recently questioned the significance of AFCON while discussing Mohamed Salah’s Ballon d’Or chances. He compared the tournament to regional competitions such as the Gold Cup and Asian Games, suggesting it was not a major football event. His comments sparked outrage, with Kuffour among the latest to voice his disapproval.
“Jamie Carragher has to apologise to all African people because AFCON is not a normal tournament,” Kuffour stated on Sporty FM.
The former Ghanaian international highlighted Africa’s impact on global football, pointing out the continent’s ability to produce world-class players.
“Africa has given us the best of the best. Africa has produced a Ballon d’Or winner,” he emphasized.
Kuffour did not hold back in his criticism of Carragher, questioning his football legacy and achievements.
“What has Jamie Carragher achieved? If he wasn’t born in Liverpool, he would not have had the chance to play for Liverpool,” he argued.
He went further, dismissing Carragher’s status as a top-level defender.
“If we mention the best 2,000 defenders in the world, Jamie Carragher will not be part of them. He’s nothing. He just talks. He should be ashamed of himself.”
Although Carragher later clarified that he did not intend to disrespect AFCON, his comments have triggered strong reactions, with many calling for greater recognition of African football’s prestige and influence.
