Ghana coach Avram Grant says his first and foremost target is to win the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Stars manager is under fire after his team’s poor start to the group stage of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers: Ghana have claimed just one point from two matches and trail leaders Egypt by five matches.
The Israeli nearly took Ghana to AFCON glory in the 2015 finals in Equatorial Guinea, with his side beaten on penalties in the final by Ivory Coast.
Grant, whose contract with the Ghana FA runs out after the AFCON tournament, is determined to lift the continental trophy and end the Black Stars’ 35-year wait for a fifth title.
“We have an AFCON coming up and our target is clear,” Grant told Asempa FM, as quoted by GHANASoccernet.
“I always want to finish my contract and in my contract, I was asked to win the AFCON.
“Our target is the African Cup and that was why I was given two years and three months so I want to win the AFCON, but it is not going to be easy because there are other countries who will be aiming to win it, but I know it is possible.
“In football, you cannot think beyond two or three months so let do what we need to do in the AFCON before we think about the next step.”
The 2017 AFCON begins on January 14. Ghana have been pooled with Uganda, Mali and Egypt in the first round.
