The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Hon. Benjamin Kessie, has led the Tarkwa community in a bold decision to remove officials from the National Sports Authority (NSA) from the Tarkwa-Nsuaem (TNA) Stadium.
This move comes after growing frustration over the management and deteriorating condition of the stadium under NSA oversight.
Hon. Kessie and community members voiced concerns about the poor state of the facility, accusing the NSA of neglect and mismanagement. In response, the Tarkwa community resolved to take control of the stadium by forming an Interim Management Committee (IMC), tasked with managing daily operations and overseeing maintenance.
The IMC, made up of representatives from various stakeholder groups in Tarkwa, aims to restore the stadium to meet the required standards for hosting sporting events and other community activities. The committee plans to work closely with local authorities to ensure proper maintenance and efficient management of the facility.
Hon. Kessie underscored the significance of the stadium to the people of Tarkwa, noting that it serves as a vital center for sports, social, and cultural activities. “We cannot allow our stadium to fall into disrepair, especially when it plays such an essential role in our community’s life. This decision is in the best interest of Tarkwa,” he stated.
The NSA has yet to issue an official response to the community’s decision, but the situation has sparked discussions about the broader issues of sports infrastructure management in Ghana. Local leaders hope this action will set a precedent for improved accountability and oversight in the management of public sports facilities nationwide.
The Interim Management Committee is set to begin work immediately, aiming to restore the TNA Stadium to a standard that reflects the pride and aspirations of the Tarkwa community.
