Hearts of Oak legend Mohammed Ahmed Polo has voiced his frustration over the club’s recent decline, describing the current state of the once-mighty Phobians as “mediocre.”
The former Ghana international, renowned for his role in the club’s golden era, lamented Hearts of Oak’s inability to build on the success achieved under former coach Samuel Boadu, who led the team to a Ghana Premier League title and two FA Cup victories—their first major trophies in over a decade.
In the recently concluded 2024/25 season, Hearts of Oak finished fourth in the Ghana Premier League with 58 points and suffered a disappointing exit in the Round of 16 of the MTN FA Cup.
Speaking to Sporty FM, Polo criticised the club’s leadership and questioned the ambition of the current management.
“Hearts of Oak is now a mediocre club. They finished fourth, and the management were celebrating. That is unacceptable for a club of Hearts of Oak’s stature,” he said.
“Hearts should be aiming for the FIFA Club World Cup. We beat Esperance to win a trophy years ago, and now Esperance are playing at the Club World Cup while we’re stuck in mediocrity. It all comes down to poor management—that’s what has brought Hearts to this point,” Polo added.
Meanwhile, the club has confirmed the appointment of Mas-Ud Didi Dramani as head coach on a two-year deal ahead of the 2025/26 season. Former coach Aboubakar Ouattara has been reassigned to a new role as Special Advisor to the Board of Directors.
