English League two side Colchester United have become very popular in Ghana recently after midfielder Kwame Afriyie Poku was handed his debut Black Stars call up for the 2021Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe.
Ghana will face South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers on March 25 and 28 respectively.
Poku who won the Colchester United young player of the year in 2020 and also was nominated for both goal of the season and best player of the season award, was named in Charles Akonnor’s 29-man squad for the two games.
Kwame Adubofour Afriyie Opoku, undoubtedly is one of the best players for Colchester in the English League two.
However, there two other Ghanaian players who play for the English lower-tier side.
Michael Kwaku Folivi:
Michael Kwaku Folivi is an English-born Ghanaian forward who currently plays for Colchester United.
The 23-year old forward who enjoyed a loan spell at AFC Wimbledon during the 2019/20 season, joined Colchester United last year November after he was released by parent club Watford FC.
Folivi has scored three goals in 20 games for Colchester so far in the 2020/21 campaign and has also provided one assist.
Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu:
Brendan Nana Akwasi Sarpong-Wiredu is also an English-born Ghanaian forward who currently plays for Colchester United.
Sarpong joined Colchester United on a permanent deal from Charlton Athletic in February this year. The midfielder joined the league two side earlier this year for an undisclosed fee, after signing an 18-month contract at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
Predominately a midfielder, Sarpong-Wiredu spent his entire career at Charlton Athletic. He has been sent out on loan in the past years. He made just six senior appearances for Charlton.
The 21-year old midfielder who got injured after joining Colchester has made 10 appearances for the club this campaign with no goal to his name.
