Morocco’s U23 national team has secured their place in the Paris Olympics 2024, becoming the second African nation to do so after a thrilling match against Mali in the TotalEnergies CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.
The atmosphere at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat was electric as the match unfolded with excitement and intensity. Morocco took an early lead when Zakaria El Quahdi found the back of the net in the 14th minute, igniting the enthusiasm of the home crowd.
However, Mali, led by the inspirational Mamady Diambou, showed great resilience and grew in confidence as the game progressed. In the 66th minute, Diambou equalized for Mali, setting the stage for a captivating encounter. With no resolution in regular time, the match was extended by an additional 30 minutes.
In the 108th minute, Morocco regained the lead with Amine El Quazzani’s goal. Yet, Mali refused to surrender and managed to equalize once more in the 116th minute through Issoufi Maiga’s close-range header, leveling the score at 2-2.
The fate of the match was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout. Morocco displayed composure and converted all four of their penalties successfully, while Mali faltered with misses from captain Boubacar Traore and Ahmed Diomande.
The victory ignited jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan team and their passionate supporters, marking a significant milestone in their Olympic journey.
In the final, set to take place on Saturday in Rabat, Morocco will face defending champions Egypt. Meanwhile, Guinea and Mali will compete for the third Paris Olympic slot in a playoff match on Friday in Tangier.
