Former Ghana premier league coach Kwadwo Osei Marfo says he sometimes feels committing suicide because of how he lost his eyes a night before a game.
Coach Marfo in 1979 had the chance to manage the Asante Kotoko U-20 side that had former Ghana international Tony Yeboah, Stanley Aborah among others.
He was promoted to the senior side to assist Ibrahim Sunday in 1984 after the club had won its second Champions League trophy the previous year.
Coach Kwadwo Marfo explains how he lost his eyes; “We had a match against RTU when I was Adansiman and lost my eyes a night before the match day. I had no eye problem before this tragedy, I’ve been to places to have my eyes back but it has all proved futile,” he said in an interview with Youtube channel Kwaku Osei TV.
“It’s never natural, I know it’s natural but I don’t know who’s behind. Wherever I go, they tell me I still have a chance to have my eyes back.
“One pastor in Kumasi (Obama) opened my eyes some time ago. If you ever heard a maniac nearly killed a man in Kumasi before, it was I. We were at the church one day and the maniac entered, holding a cutlass and everybody run including the pastor and I was left inside with the maniac, those times I was seeing a bit but not in full. All I saw was someone raising a cutlass on me, he stood there for a minute and he put the cutlass down and knelt in front of me and said ‘this is my mind but I can’t’”
“It was on Friday. I didn’t go home, I slept at the church that weekend so on Sunday during a church service, the pastor called me and healed my eyes. After the healing, I was asleep one day and someone rubbed my face with his hands and I went blind again and I’ve not regained it till now and I know it’s the combination of work and my home.”
“Sometimes I feel it’s better to have my life short. It’s very painful, the only thing the motivates me is that I am not the only blind person alive, my situation is even better than someone’s own”
Marfo said it marvels him why Alhaji Grunsah, a man he worked and contributed to his success has ignored him.
“Alhaji Grunsah hasn’t stepped afoot at my house which makes me feel worried because I did great work at Faisal.”
“I don’t blame Asante Kotoko if they don’t remember because of the change of management. I worked with a lot of leaders at the club and the current management I know doesn’t know me so I don’t blame them, the person I blame the most is Alhaji Grusah, he said I’ve insulted him so he won’t mind me”
“Only God knows how I survive. Sometimes Marko Edusei helps me financially. I am the reason behind Alhaji Grusah’s wealth today. When I went to King Faisal it was oldies who were playing for them those times so with my experience at Kotoko U20, I did good scouting and selected young and talented players including Ibrahim Tanko, Mark Edusei, Kwadwo Peace, Yaw Sebe and sidelined the old players so Alhaji said I’ve collapsed his team”
“We lost several matches in the beginning but I kept telling Alhaji to have patience until we started picking up and within a few period we were a force to reckon with. After the first season, Alhaji sold over 8 players to foreign clubs including and that was his breakthrough”
“Among all these players I raised, only Mark Edusei and Anthony Osei Kwadwo give me something. Osei Kwadwo few days ago assured me that he was going to organize the players in Canada and the USA to come to my aid”
Marfo however, pleaded with the public to come to his aid.
“Football fans, I started on a good note but this is the end. I will need your help because I am handicapped now and help comes from God. I pray God touches your hearts and come to my aid because I am really suffering”
He was the brain behind King Faisal’s promotion to the Ghana premier league before quitting to rejoin Asante Kotoko in 1984/85 season and had six separate stints with the Porcupines as a coach. He had had stints with King Faisal, Tema GHAPOHA, Bofoakwa Tano, Power FC among others.
