Former Black Stars assistant coach Maxwell Konadu has thrown his support behind the current Ghana national team squad, emphasizing that with the right mindset, they have the potential to reach greater heights on the international stage.
After a disappointing run in 2024—where the team managed just two wins in ten matches—Ghana has started 2025 on a high. The Black Stars secured back-to-back victories in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, thrashing Chad 5-0 and following up with a convincing 3-0 win over Madagascar in Morocco.
Despite the team’s earlier struggles, Konadu believes the current group of players has the quality needed to compete at the highest level, pointing out their involvement in top European leagues.
“We have top players,” the former Asante Kotoko and Black Leopards coach told Graphic Sports. “Even though not all of them are in top clubs, many are playing in the best leagues in Europe. That alone should tell you that we have quality. It’s just a matter of getting them together and instilling the right attitude.”
Konadu stressed that unity and mentality are just as important as talent, and if the players adopt the right approach, they can make a serious impact on the world stage.
Ghana is now well-positioned in the qualifiers and looks to continue their strong run in September when they face Chad and Mali. The Black Stars are aiming to secure their place at the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
