The President of Susubribi Sporting Club, George Afriyie has insisted that Division One League clubs in the country will resist any attempt by the Ghana Football Association to reduce its electoral college.
The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), on Friday 17th December, 2021 held a productive meeting with the 48 Division One League clubs at the headquarters in Accra.
The meeting discussed the new competitions pyramid that included the Division One Super League, support system for the clubs, and cost of running the League, payment of officiating fees, among others.
In the meeting, the Executive Council announced the decision to suspend the 18 club Division One Super League which was announced during the 27th ordinary session of Congress in Prampram last month – as clubs were given 14 days to set up a Committee to look into the modalities and implementation of the new structure as the meeting resolved that the new competition be suspended until further notice.
However, speaking on Kumasi-based Akoma FM on Saturday evening, Mr. Afriyie disclosed that Presidents; CEO’s of the 48 Division One League teams will strongly oppose the country’s football governing body’s decision to reduce the electoral college to 18.
“We will resist any attempt to reduce electoral college. I am a political animal. White must be seen to be white. Reduction will mean endorsement of highest bidder politics,” said the former FA vice President.
“I am also against reducing the clubs to 18 because geographical considerations in our jurisdiction is very important. I disagree when anyone says no serious country plays a 48 team league because i am not playing a 48 league. I am rather playing an 18 zone league.” He added.
