Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has stated that he is not currently preoccupied with thoughts of a second term, despite having less than five months remaining in his four-year mandate.
The current leadership of Ghana football assumed office in October 2019, following a period of FIFA-Government of Ghana normalization after the sport was rocked by corruption exposés.
During his campaign, under the theme “Igniting passion and creating wealth for all,” Okraku contested and emerged victorious after a rigorous election process that went through three rounds.
As the current executives are expected to complete their tenure in October, it is widely anticipated that the GFA will hold elections at some point in 2023.
When asked about his intentions for a second term in an interview with Supersport’s Juliet Bawuah, the GFA President stated, “I don’t know whether elections are coming up this year. And I haven’t started thinking about elections yet.”
However, Okraku hinted that a potential re-election bid would be influenced by the sentiments of the football community.
“I react to the mood of the people,” he noted. “I will respond according to the desires of the people. I recall that four years ago, I was asked the same question: ‘Will Kurt Okraku run for re-election?’ and my response has always been, ‘When the time comes, football will speak.'”
Okraku’s focus at present appears to be on fulfilling his current term and addressing the needs and aspirations of the football community, while keeping an open mind about the future based on the prevailing sentiments within Ghanaian football.
