Tottenham Hotspur striker Heung-min Son has completed his South Korean military service duty after completing his mandatory volunteer hours, according to Naver.
All able-bodied South Korean men must complete 21 months of service in the military before the age of 28 as a deterrent against the North, but exemptions are offered to athletes who win gold at the Asian Games or a medal of any colour at the Olympics (Metro).
Ghana, Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea are in the same group at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Son secured an exemption from full military service along with his South Korean teammates when they beat Japan to win gold in the Asian Games football tournament back in 2018 and instead had to complete a three-week basic military training along with some community service obligations.
The South Korean news outlet has claimed that the 29-year-old has undertaken 544 hours of special military service volunteer work which came to a conclusion when he reported for international duty last month.
Some of Son’s voluntary work saw him visit a Korean school in London and gave football lessons to the children.
Son has been in impressive form in recent weeks and Spurs will need the South Korean to continue to do his part in what has been a lethal front three alongside Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski if the club are to finish in the top four.
